Devon is spectacular, this place truly puts the 'great' into great outdoors. Here at Marjon we are close to stunning coastlines, glorious green countryside and the striking landscapes of Dartmoor National Park. And beaches abound with a mix of rugged coves and sweeeping sandy bays.
There is so much to do that we asked our Outdoor Adventure Education students to tell us about the best days out in South Devon. All these places you can go to for free, but plan for car parking charges... and maybe to hire a kayak, SUP or surf board! We've numbered them one to ten in order of distance from our campus, but they're all worth the trip.
Plymbridge Woods is just minutes from campus. Join Drake's Trail, a 21 mile off-road walking and cycling route that links 91视频 and Tavistock; this is a level and leisurely route along an old railway line which can take you all the way to Saltram House, a local National Trust property. Or stroll through ancient woodlands, beside the beautiful River Plym.
Dartmoor National Park's landscape is dramatic, with granite tors, open moorland and to wooded river valleys. It is a landscape of contrasts - some people come to get away from it all, whilst others come to get active. Anna's tip is to take a walk around Burrator Reservoir.
Wembury, our local beach, is ever popular with Marjon students and commands a striking view of the Great Mewstone. Izzy, an Outdoor Ed graduate, recommends the coastal walk out to Wembury Point or some surfing. Free parking for National Trust members.
Mount Edgcumbe has a bit of everything - history, views and a great pub called The Edgcumbe Arms. Walk the coastal path into Cornwall or stay to explore Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
Cycle round the Rame Peninsula, also known as Cornwall’s forgotten corner. Take a break on the beach at Cawsand or Kingsand.
Explore the lesser known Yealm Estuary which flows through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Pick up the South West Coast Path from Warren car park and walk a five mile loop around the penisula via the picturesque village of Noss Mayo, where a great pub awaits you. Thanks to OAE'er Stuart for this tip!
When asked about the best day out, Dr Mark Leather said: "It has to be the surfing beaches at Bigbury and Bantham - with the walk over to fabulous Burgh Island at low tide". Chill out on the beach or get active on a surf board, you can hire boards or get lessons at either Bantham or Bigbury.
Walk or paddle along the picturesque Avon Estuary enjoying the stunning wildlife. Outdoors student George told us: "Stop paddling for a moment and relax in your kayak it's probably the most mind soothing experience; quiet with beautiful surroundings." Try Totnes Kayaks at Stoke Gabriel on the River Dart if you want to hire a kayak.
Walk the coastal path from Blackpool Sands, one of Devon's most stunning beaches. Go to Beesands or onwards to the lighthouse at Start Point.
Mellow Dartmoor is the perfect backdrop for wild swimming. If you are new to this then start at Spitchwick Common. It gets busy in high summer so stroll upstream for a short while to reach alternate amazing swimming spots. Wetsuit highly recommended.
